What does “Retrofit” mean in the headlight world?? Well, Retrofitting is the process of installing a xenon or bi-xenon projector into a reflector based halogen headlight. It is the best HID headlight upgrade possible since the projector will control the light into a properly dispersed, non-glaring beam pattern.”
In the VW MK4 community, “Retrofit Headlights” are well known due to their unique look, better light output, and the variety of parts you can use to build them. Throughout the years, this has been a very popular mod, however, it is a very expensive mod which is the reason you don’t see them around too often. There are many retrofitters out there that will charge you literally an arm and a leg to build a set. Others prefer reading DIY’s guides or watch YouTube videos and attempt to do them themselves. Others simply fail and give up, as it is a complicated process and requires skills, tools, patience and imagination. Quality parts are expensive, so if you plan on doing them yourself, be ready to spend big bucks on some quality projectors, shrouds, wire adapters, etc etc. If you are sending them to a “Retrofitter” be ready to pay big amount of money to cover labor costs. Whichever route you go with, you will still end up with a headache down the road, why?? Because since a retrofit headlight is “Custom”, you are required to cut, glue, fit and aim a projector into your headlight halogen reflector bowl. Not only that, but you will have to modify your wiring harness inside your headlight to power up the ballasts. Aside from all that, on some models you even lose the ability to use the high beam due to the high beam getting stuck when you enable it. You either have to turn the headlights on and off to reset it, or simply don’t use the high beams. Now let’s talk about the rear covers, when you fit a projector into your housings, you will need to extend the rear covers to allow space for the projector. Most retrofitters cut and extend the covers using PVC parts found at a hardware stores and then apply gunks of glue to bond them, others simply don’t use covers. While most retrofit headlights look nice and clean (front only), most retrofitters never show you the rear part of the headlight, or how the projector is mounted. Why? Because this is the only part of a retrofit that does not look so good. Most retrofitters use glue or epoxy to attach the projector into the reflector bowls, which makes the job look poor and unprofessional, but hey! Who cares, no one will see it, right? Well, we do care! Who would like that? especially when you have spent over $750 dollars? The sad part is that some retrofitters call this “ART”, oh gawd! This is why we decided to manufacture our very own VXT Retrofit Style Headlights. They will deliver amazing performance, will give you a cool unique look , have that OEM + look and finish, and better yet, they come with a price tag you can afford.
We would like to introduce our MK4 Jetta VXT “Retrofit Style Headlights”. When we started designing our very own VXT retrofit style headlights back in 2015, our goal was to use the best components available and delivering a product that will give you the “Retrofit” look, but with the finish of an OEM style headlight. All of the components used on our headlights are direct fit. No glue, epoxy or cutting is used to assemble our headlights.
Here is a list of the components that come standard and are used on our VXT headlights
Reflectors:
Our VXT one-piece reflectors were designed in house, and manufactured to accept the FXR Projector and every other component just like if was OEM. Every component fits directly in its place with no cutting or modification. Talk about one clean reflector.
Projectors:
Back in 2015, when we first started designing these headlights, one of the most popular projectors at the time were the FXR 3.0 projectors. The FX-R 3.0 is a retrofitters delight with its high precision castings, advanced optics, and 2.5” clear lens. It all adds up to put the FX-R 3.0 near the top of the lighting totem poll. These projectors are still one of the best projectors up to date.
Wiring:
All of our headlights are 10 pin and come pre-wired. Every wiring harness is assembled and tested in house. We use all the correct components to allow the headlights to function 100% just like they should. With our headlights, you won’t have any problems with your high beams getting stuck like many other retrofitters do. No adapters or additional wiring is needed aside from the relay harness. Simply plug and play
Fog Lights:
We use OEM style fog light housings in our reflectors, which use H3 bulbs. Our headlights are shipped with H3 LED bulbs for Pre-Orders only. Vehicles that did not come with fogs from the factory will require a fog light harness. Ensure you also have the proper European headlight switch to operate both the parking lights & fogs.
Turn Signals:
Our turn signals lenses come in 3 different styles, Clear, Amber, and Smoked. Just select the style you want, and leave the rest to us. Our headlights include a 1156 “Amber” Single Filament Bulb with every order
HID Ballasts:
Every order includes a FREE set of our “First Gen Volx Tuning HID 35w Ballasts”. If you want a more reliable and powerful set of ballasts that will last you years, you can upgrade to the Morimoto Ballasts for an additional cost. If you have your very own ballasts, and don’t need or want the FREE VOLX ballasts we include, you can simply opt out from them in the option menu.
HID Bulbs:
Every order includes a FREE set of our VXT D2S High Performance Bulbs.
HID Relay Harness:
Customers often ask, Do I really need a harness? Yes! A relay harness is designed to deliver steady voltage to your HID ballasts directly from the car battery. Nobody likes a flickering headlight, so why risk it? Factory headlight outputs are really only designed to power a halogen light bulb, not an HID ballast. We include one with every order
DRL’s:
This is where our headlights stand out from the ordinary “Retrofit Headlights”. When we designed our reflectors, we wanted to give it an OEM look, so we decided to add a DRL just like the one found on the famous European (E-code) Headlights. All of our headlights are shipped with a “FREE” set of W5W Wedge LED Bulb.
Leveling Motor:
Another cool feature that sets us apart from the ordinary “Retrofits”. This cool feature comes standard and it’s fun to use if your car is equipped with the leveling feature.
Housings:
Our housings are made exactly to OEM specs. We use the same style and design as the standard OEM US and Euro Spec found on halogen models. No, you don’t need to send us your housings or any additional parts. All of the components we use on our headlights are brand new and are built to order.
Rear Covers:
Our rear covers are one of a kind and are like no-other. While retrofitters cut and extend the covers using PVC parts found at a hardware store, our covers are one piece and are manufactured from injection molding.
Headlight Lenses:
You have the option of plastic or Glass. Just select which style you prefer and we will take care of the rest. Update 11/2019 – We are currently out of Glass Lenses. Plastic is only available at this time. Sorry
Sealant:
Is priceless! When a high-end set of headlights is put together, the last thing you want is moisture in them the first time it rains outside. After many years sealing headlights with spools of butyl meant for windshields and sunroofs; we’ve finally got a product that puts OEM-style sealant designed specifically for use in our headlights, and indeed it works well! Our very own VXT Headlight Sealant.
Final Product:
Every headlight will be built and assembled in house, and will be inspected before it leaves the warehouse. Our general wait-list time is one to two weeks, but may be longer during holidays or closures. All orders will be shipped in the order they were received.
We guarantee that our VXT retrofit Style Headlights will be the best lighting upgrade you can do to your Jetta. What you get is a razor sharp cut off, evenly spread light, better light efficiency, intense beam output, wide beam coverage, and most important of all, it won’t cause glare to incoming motorists!
But wait, there’s more!

We also offer additional cool custom mods to our headlights such as demon eyes, sequential strips, halos and etched lenses. For custom work, please send us an email directly to sales@vxtuning.com to go over pricing and options.
